"Great!"
Roberto Ierusalimschy, creator of Lua, about the Lua OS concurrency approach

May 6 - The LuaPlex is getting real! Starting Tuesday, it will probably be populated every day :)
Apr 30 - The LuaPlex got its own homepage :)
Apr 23 - OK guys... there has been a LOT of interest in me/the project since I announced the LuaPlex (20,000 visitors to luaos.net over the weekend). This is definitely all going to be very interesting. I am now quite precisely (almost) on top of the world. Stuff has to settle a little, then I will start getting in contact with lots of people. Cheers & peace and thanks to all of you for your support so far. -Stefan :)

What is Lua OS?

Lua OS is—or aspires to become—two things:

  1. A first-class modern Linux distribution for the desktop that you can use every day for everything you want to do with your computer—and something that is always offering enjoyment.
  2. A next-generation, orthogonally persistent operating system for portable, manageable and secure scripting code.

The Lua OS project is spearheaded by Stefan Reich who deserted from Google Inc. in 2008 in order to pursue much greater visions.

The quest for a Lua operating system

by Stefan Reich, Aug 11th 2011

Lua is an interesting and unusual scripting language. It is simple, easy to understand and learn - but it seems that even seasoned programmers do not find it limiting. It grows with your needs, and in this author's opinion, its possible uses rival those of any other language.

Indeed, Lua's characteristics make it a perfect candidate for implementing ideas that have been simmering in the pipeline for several years. Lua scripts are portable and easy to make secure. The concept of "sandboxes" plays a central role here.

Thus, a Lua OS has great potential for being a secure, transparent and easy-to-manage computing platform. So, how do we make such a system?

Approaches to creating a Lua OS

At the time of writing this, there seem to be two serious attempts to create a Lua OS. There is lv0/Khoros, and there is Safe Lua. Each of them pursues a very different approach.

This website is primarily about Safe Lua (which we currently call Lua OS). For lv0/Khoros, please visit lv0.org.

lv0/Khoros was started in 2008, then spent some time in hiatus - and now it seems it is under development again. We will inform you here when new versions are out!

Safe Lua (Lua OS) is very new (started Aug 2011) and currently under active development. We're looking for sponsors too...! :)

Latest download count (Sep 28): 1,000 downloads. Exponential growth from here!
